My first Blog

So what can you find on this new web site, well for starters there’s more information on past projects and what we (Migration Productions) are working on now. In fact this month Jim Grady and I will be going to Cape May to work on our latest video project on shorebirds which we hope to have completed sometime next year. So far we have interviewed many people here in Massachusetts and last August we went to the Bay of Fundy in Canada as part of this project. I’ll keep you posted on the progress of our shorebird video in months to come so stay tuned.

Other items of interest for my fellow photographers is the news on three of the Mass Audubon photo blinds. First the
Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center (VAC) bird photo blind is set up for use with a few updates made last year and some additional updates to be made soon. Good friend and fellow birder Steve Anderson installed a new door two years ago however we had a problem last spring and had to add a new door latch. That seems to have done the trick and the door survived the winter and works perfectly. I spent some time there last week and got some nice photos of White-breasted Nuthatch, Song Sparrow, Junco, House Sparrow and Cardinal. While I did photograph Eastern Bluebird, Flicker and Cooper’s Hawk at the VAC, I was not inside the Bird Photo Blind for those images. Also as you can see below I photographed a Cooper’s Hawk which landed on one of the “perches” in front of the Photo Blind while I was waiting to photograph the Bluebird. Just my luck.....the one time I would or should have been inside the VAC Bird Photo Blind I was instead in the filed behind the blind trying to get a Bluebird!

The other two blinds are located at Mass Audubon Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary in Marshfield. As a birder or photographer if you have not visited this sanctuary you owe it to yourself to go there the next chance you have. As you arrive in the parking area you will see a small pond just to you right that has two observation blinds that are well suited and “fixed up” for photographers. This past weekend I had some good photos of Painted Turtle, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Little Blue Heron, Glossy Ibis and Snipe. The blind closest to the parking area is best in the afternoon while the blind on the far side of the pond is best in the morning. Please note you will want to bring a bean bag for your lens as a tripod does not really works well inside the blinds. Click here to view more photos taken from observation blinds.
